Colitis
Just been diagnosed, I know it's still nasty but honestly relieved given the nasty symptoms I've had for 6 months!

Anyone got it? Am I destined to not enjoy a vindaloo again? What about drink?

Doc says eat as normal - but all NHS info has a long list of don'ts so would appreciate some first hand advice (sorry Gank)

Re: Colitis
I've had Crohn's for about 5 years. I've generally not been too bad apart from a couple of flare ups when I've had to take steroids. It looks like think the medication I'm on now (Asacol) is beginning to lose its effectiveness so ill probably need some harder stuff soon.

I've just tried taking kefir a week or so ago, which is fermented dairy drink like yoghurt with loads of good bacteria for the gut. Hard to tell if its just placebo but I've been feeling quite a bit better. I also take omega 3 supplements too.

Good luck, find what works for you and what triggers to avoid food wise.

Re: Colitis
My wife has had it for years, last year she joined Slimming World and the diet she is on through that seems to had sorted it. Just a case of eating properly, cut out cooking oil, plenty of greens (kale, spinach etc). She also cut out the wine, which could be the toughest thing.

The bonus is she has lost 4 stone as well.

Thanks all, some good advice here. Obviously it's more common than I thought, probably the stress of following West Ham.

Re: Colitis
I had it in both colons as a result of treatment of a different disease. I had tubes coming out everywhere! Not a fun time. It cleared up though thanks to a dose of very powerful steroids. Sadly I lost my handsome youthful figure

........and avoid musli, oats, porride (unless ready break which is refined) most cereals though Corn flakes, rice crispies, wheatabix and special K are okay.

Re: Colitis
As with all / most bowel disease, when you have a flare up eat a low fibre diet......
White bread, rice, pasta potatoes (no skins) are good, no wholemeal or wholewheat.
Low fat cooking and lean meat and fish, eggs, soft cheese, seedless jam, rindless marmalade and smooth peanut butter are all okay.
Alcohol is okay I think though obviously gassy soft & hard drinks will cause bloating & wind and will aggravate things so steady with the beer. Non pulpy fruit juices, squash, herbal teas are good. Tea and coffee are okay though in extreme cases it is not.
Also worth trying Lactose free milk, they even do soft and hard cheese and a butter/oil spread. Definitely worth trying to see if that helps. You can buy drops for normal milk that give you the enzyme to digest lactose instead of buying the milk which is only found in supermarkets and costs more.
Mint or camomile tea is very effective too.
Stress can also cause flare ups.

As you can see I'm well read on this due to suffering with IBS for 15 years. I would highly recomend white rice being a staple as it really sorts me out. You can even have a curry with it though not an oily crap one.

Try a bland low fibre diet for a week or so and you'll be amazed. Then introduce other food one at a time to see how or if it affects you.
Good luck mate.

Re: Colitis
Oh and if they do bung you a course of steroids make sure you get a Calcium supplements, ( This should be organised with the initial prescription from the hospital) .

I am of course taking about Ulcerative Colitis. Not sure which one you have.

Some mentioned earlier the charity NACC or Chris And Colitis as it's known now. They are really good and can get you loads of advise. Plus you get a special pass that asks people if you can you use the Thrones for a emergency outage. Very handy!!

Re: Colitis
Yes, got diagnosed back in 2000. My Arse disease as my mates call it. Flares on and off, but luckily seem to be on a bit of remission fora while.

Not sure what your treatment is, I had steroids and Asacol that seem to help. Luckily seem to have a good consultant that keeps an eye on things

Once you get to the routine of taking the meds and stuff fingers crossed it will work out.

Still able to drink and have the odd Ruby now and again.

Best of luck fella.

Assume you are now on medication ' it will settle down
eventually 'although when it first kicks in it is not pleasant ' eventually you will learn how to manage it ' what you can eat and drink at what times etc...when it is bad stick to bland foods ham ' cheese ' bread etc and avoid rich / spicy / fibre

i met this girl a few years ago when working abroad and had a drink with her. she was working at a health hotel and we became friends on facebook etc, anyway i have followed her business over the years and she has done really well and is such an inspiration to others. She is a really really lovely person and no i haven't.

Listen to this podcast as well, it is long but truly inspirational. even if you don't have the problems that you guys and her had it is still worth listening to.

Re: Colitis
I hope it does not give you too much difficulty over your life, many people who have colitis survive with not that much difficulty and not that many flare ups hope you are one of them.

Re: Colitis
Sorry to hear than Mr A. Do you know what your condition is precisely, as there are different forms ? Ulcerative colitis is on the list of my mother's ailments.

There's a lot of advice about diet, but much of it seems inconclusive or debatable. I think a lot of it is common sense (so that probably rules out vindaloo) and personal (ie what works for you or affects you might not apply to others).

I would DEFINITELY recommend starting a food journal immediately and being rigorous about it - don't rely on memory.

Have you been prescribed a course of treatment yet ? My mum's been on Remicade (Infliximab) for a while now but that doesn't seem to have done the trick. Your age and general health other than this obviously come into the equation, but if you could see my old dear today I reckon you'd be making immediate and fairly radical alterations to your lifestyle, I'm sorry to say.

Re: Colitis
Lewis Moody the ex rubgy player has it or had it. i am sure there is something on his website about it.

Look up a girl called Meghan Telphner, she is a good friend and is based in Toronto. she has a thing called "making love in the kitchen" and it is all about the right foods to eat and how it helped her keep it under control and get rid of it.

I have another friend with it and she swore by some diet or tablets. will find out more and let you know.

Just don't stop fighting it as it is a bastard

Darren Fletcher has it. Apparently that's the reason WHU didn't sign him. What a good move that was(n't)
